PRESS RELEASE
October 8th, 2019
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) will appoint Pella Thiel as the Environmental Hero of the Year 2019 in the category of biodiversity on October 11th, 2019. Pella is currently the Vice-Chairperson of “End Ecocide Sweden” and is also an active member of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature, where she is also part of the Advisory Board. Other than performing functions as Vice-President of End Ecocide Sweden, Pella also forms part of the group of experts of the United Nations “Harmony with Nature” initiative. Pella is an active and engaged leader in the network Nature Rights in Sweden. She is also engaged in the activities pertaining to the European Rights of Nature Hub formed by the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature. She is a referent in the global movement and participates in the advancement of the Rights of Nature activities and events both in Sweden and around the globe, such as the International Rights of Nature Symposium which took place in Quito-Ecuador in September 2018.
“Giving nature rights is an idea with an existential dimension. […] Nature’s rights are gaining ground quickly in the world and the award is important for the entire movement, from lawyers to activists, from indigenous peoples to churches.” – Pella Thiel.
The award ceremony will take place on October 11th in Stockholm, Sweden, and will be presented by His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf. The prize, given out by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was also awarded to Greta Thunberg, who is also an advocate for the expanding climate movement.
Within the climate strike’s demands, under the “Respect of Indigenous Land and Sovereignty,” there is one point that says: “Recognize the Rights of Nature into law to protect our sacred ecosystems and align human law with natural law to ban resource extraction in defense of our environment and people”. We see the growing demands to find solutions for the climate crisis and we are seeing that the Rights of Nature has the potential to be a powerful solution for the challenges we are facing as an Earth Community on this planet.
