We are proud to celebrate the incredible achievement of Mari Luz Canaquiri, Kukama leader and President of the Federación Huaynakana Kamatahuara Kana, who has just been awarded the 2025 Goldman Environmental Prize—the world’s most prestigious award for grassroots environmental defenders.
This recognition honors Mari Luz’s decades-long defense of the Marañón River, a major tributary of the Amazon and a sacred being for the Kukama People of the Peruvian Amazon. But this is also a victory for Indigenous women, for the Rights of Nature, and for the global movement to protect rivers, forests, and all life from extractivism and ecological destruction.
A Sacred River Under Threat
For over 50 years, the Marañón River has been a site of devastation. Oil spills, mercury contamination from illegal mining, and fossil fuel infrastructure have desecrated this vital waterway. In 2022 alone, over 10,000 barrels of oil spilled into the river. These disasters are not only environmental; they are cultural, spiritual, and existential.
“Our river is sacred to us: We have everything there” says Mari Luz.
The Power of Indigenous Women’s Leadership
In the face of these threats, the women of Huaynakana Kamatahuara Kana rose up. For years, they organized, spoke out, and took action to protect the river and their communities. Mari Luz emerged as a visionary leader—a mother, a fighter, and a voice for her people and for Nature.
As she reminds us:
“As women and as mothers, we are fighting in defense of our rivers and territories, thinking of our children and future generations.”
A Legal Breakthrough: The Marañón Becomes a Rights-Bearing Entity
In 2024, under the leadership of Mari Luz and the Kukama women, a historic legal milestone was achieved: the Superior Court of Justice of Loreto recognized the Marañón River as a subject of rights. This marked the first time a river has been granted rights in Peru.
The ruling was the result of years of legal and community organizing by Kukama women, supported by a coalition of allies, including: Earth Law Center, which led a key Amicus Curiae with International Rivers and the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN). Peru’s Institute of Legal Defense led the legal case.
Mari Luz’s win is more than symbolic—it sends a powerful message to the world: the Rights of Nature are not a dream. They are already here.
Her courage shines as a beacon for defenders everywhere, especially Indigenous women leading environmental struggles under the most dangerous conditions. As extractive industries continue to expand in the Amazon and beyond, her voice calls us to act—boldly, collectively, and in defense of Life itself. This legal victory adds to a growing global call: It is time to recognize the Amazon as a subject of rights.

Nos llena de orgullo celebrar el increíble logro de Mari Luz Canaquiri, lideresa Kukama y presidenta de la Federación Huaynakana Kamatahuara Kana, quien acaba de recibir el Premio Ambiental Goldman 2025—el reconocimiento más importante del mundo para defensores ambientales de base.
Este premio honra las décadas de lucha de Mari Luz por la defensa del río Marañón, un afluente vital del Amazonas y un ser sagrado para el pueblo Kukama de la Amazonía peruana. Pero también representa una victoria para las mujeres indígenas, para los Derechos de la Naturaleza y para el movimiento global que protege los ríos, los bosques y toda forma de vida frente al extractivismo y la destrucción ecológica.
Un río sagrado bajo amenaza
Durante más de 50 años, el río Marañón ha sido escenario de devastación. Derrames de petróleo, contaminación por mercurio debido a la minería ilegal e infraestructura fósil han profanado este cuerpo de agua fundamental. Solo en 2022, se derramaron más de 10.000 barriles de petróleo en el río. Estas tragedias no son solo ambientales; son también culturales, espirituales y existenciales.
“Nuestro río es sagrado: ahí tenemos todo”, afirma Mari Luz.
El poder del liderazgo de las mujeres indígenas
Ante estas amenazas, las mujeres de la Federación Huaynakana Kamatahuara Kana se levantaron. Durante años se organizaron, alzaron la voz y tomaron acción para proteger el río y a sus comunidades. Mari Luz emergió como una lideresa visionaria: madre, luchadora y voz de su pueblo y de la Naturaleza.
Como ella misma nos recuerda:
“Como mujeres y como madres, estamos luchando en defensa de nuestros ríos y territorios, pensando en nuestros hijos y en las futuras generaciones.”
Un precedente legal histórico: el Marañón se convierte en sujeto de derechos
En 2024, bajo el liderazgo de Mari Luz y las mujeres Kukama, se alcanzó un hito legal histórico: la Corte Superior de Justicia de Loreto reconoció al río Marañón como sujeto de derechos. Es la primera vez que un río es reconocido con derechos en el Perú.
Este fallo fue el resultado de años de lucha legal y comunitaria por parte de las mujeres Kukama, con el apoyo de una coalición de aliadas, incluyendo a Earth Law Center, que lideró un importante Amicus Curiae junto con International Rivers y la Alianza Global por los Derechos de la Naturaleza. El Instituto de Defensa Legal del Perú, por su parte, lideró el caso legal.
La victoria de Mari Luz es mucho más que simbólica: envía un mensaje poderoso al mundo. Los Derechos de la Naturaleza no son un sueño futuro. Ya están aquí.
Su valentía brilla como un faro para defensoras y defensores en todo el mundo, especialmente para mujeres indígenas que lideran luchas ambientales en las condiciones más peligrosas. Mientras las industrias extractivas continúan expandiéndose en la Amazonía y más allá, su voz nos llama a actuar—con valentía, en colectivo y en defensa de la Vida. Esta victoria legal se suma a un llamado global cada vez más fuerte: es hora de reconocer a la Amazonía como sujeto de derechos.
