Ecuador’s current constitution is one of the most advanced in the world: it includes rights of nature, the right to water, and collective rights for indigenous peoples who protect valuable ecosystems. This constitution also guarantees various types of consultations that allow citizens to have a say on economic activities with a high environmental impact, such as oil and mining.
Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, who strongly supports opening up oil extraction and mining in Ecuador, is promoting constitutional change. His government has called a referendum for November 16th so that citizens can decide whether they want to dissolve the existing constitution and have a new one drafted.
As researchers, scientists, academics, artists, environmental advocates, and supporters of Indigenous peoples, we express our support for environmental defenders in Ecuador and encourage Ecuadorian citizens to maintain Ecuador’s current Constitution and vote No on the call for a constituent assembly.
This letter was signed by more than 780 scientists, researchers, and artists throughout the world, expressing their concern over Ecuador’s dire situation.

La Constitución actual de Ecuador es de los más avanzadas en el mundo: incluye los derechos de la naturaleza, el derecho al agua y derechos colectivos para pueblos indígenas que protegen ecosistemas invaluables. Esta constitución también garantiza varios tipos de consultas que permiten a los ciudadanos ejercer su voz ante actividades económicas con alto impacto ambiental, como el petróleo y la minería.
El presidente ecuatoriano Daniel Noboa, quien apoya fuertemente la apertura a la extracción de petróleo y minería en Ecuador, está promoviendo un cambio de Constitución. Su gobierno convocó a un referéndum para el 16 de noviembre en el cual los ciudadanos decidirán si quieren mantener la constitución actual o que se elabore el proyecto de una nueva.
Representando a investigadores, científicos, académicos, artistas, activistas ambientales y aliados de pueblos indígenas, expresamos nuestro apoyo a los defensores de la naturaleza en Ecuador y alentamos a los ciudadanos ecuatorianos a mantener la constitución actual de Ecuador votando NO a la convocatoria de una asamblea constituyente.
Esta carta fue firmada por más de 780 científicos, investigadores y artistas en todo el mundo que expresan su preocupación por la situación límite que se está viviendo en Ecuador.
