The Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN) is proud to announce Ben Price, National Organizing Director at the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF), as our Outstanding Member of the Month.
Ben has been a visionary leader in the Rights of Nature movement for nearly two decades. In 2006, he helped the people of Tamaqua Borough, Pennsylvania, pass the first-ever Western law recognizing the Rights of Nature. Since then, Ben has supported the drafting of Rights of Nature legislation in communities across the U.S., including Pittsburgh, PA; Ohio; New Hampshire; New York; and Virginia.
His work isn’t limited to North America. Ben traveled to Ecuador to support the inclusion of Rights of Nature in the country’s Constitution and contributed to the development of GARN’s Siena Declaration in Italy. As a member of GARN’s North America and Academic Hubs, Ben continues to mentor, organize, and build bridges between movements.
“Fifteen years ago I traveled to Ecuador to participate in the formation of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature, little knowing that today what started for me very humbly in a small coal mining town in Pennsylvania would flourish into a world-encompassing effort to emancipate Mother Nature from abuse at the hands of people who pretend to own her. My heart warms with joy and appreciation for the honor of living and striving among other GARN members devoted to Earth Life,” he says.
Ben is also the author of three books—How Wealth Rules the World, Ogden: A Time for the End of Time, and Wouldn’t You Say—and has educated countless community members, public officials, and legal advocates through his work with CELDF.
Ben’s vision continues to inspire a Rights of Nature movement rooted in justice, community self-determination, and ecological integrity.
